Emmett Fitzgerald grew up in Alton, Illinois. After finishing high school in 1944, he immediately entered the US Navy and served on active duty in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters until the conclusion of World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Notre Dame for both his undergraduate and law degrees. Upon graduation from law school, he served as a law clerk for Justice Roger Kiley of the Appellate Court of Illinois, First District in 1952 and 1953. He then returned to Alton and began his practice with the firm of Verlie, Eastman & Schlafly, which firm later became known as Schlafly, Godfrey and Fitzgerald. In 1986, he joined and became a partner in the law firm of Hoagland, Fitzgerald & Pranaitis, where he remained until joining Rynearson, Suess, Schnurbusch & Champion as an of counsel associate, effective January 1, 2017. He has earned the prestigious AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating by Martrindale-Hubbell. Over his many years of living in Alton, he has been involved in many charitable activities and served as a director on numerous boards, including The Alton Foundation, St. Anthony’s Hospital (Alton), Marquette High School Advisory Board and Mercantile Bank of Illinois.
