William (Bill) Hoagland grew up in Alton, Illinois and coming from an extended family of lawyers, has been around lawyers his entire life. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan (B.A. 1962) and the University of Illinois College of Law (LL.B 1965). After graduation from law school, he returned to Alton to practice with his brother in the firm of Hoagland, Maucker, Bernard and Almeter. In 1966, he enlisted in the US Army and was on active duty for three years in the Counterintelligence Corps. In 1969, he was released from active duty and returned to practice with the Hoagland firm. In 1986, the firm was renamed Hoagland, Fitzgerald, Smith and Pranaitis, and at that point, he became a partner, a position he held until January 1, 2017, when he became an of counsel associate with Rynearson, Suess, Schnurbusch & Champion. For the first 25 years of his practice, Bill was involved primarily in insurance defense litigation, including numerous jury trials to verdict, in both state and federal court. During the last 25 years of practice, Bill has primarily represented one specific corporate client in various litigation matters throughout the United States. Throughout his entire 50 years of practice, Bill has also handled various probate, real estate, and commercial matters for long time clients of the Hoagland firm. Bill has been married to Annie, his wife, for 52 years and they have two sons and four grandchildren. He and his wife have been involved in extensive charitable endeavors in the Alton community. Bill has a number of outside interests, including hunting, fishing, hiking and cooking.
